Dog of The Day for 2/5/2012 — Sondheim

“Sondheim is a shih-tzu with a huge personality who loves to be around people. I teach high school and he has spent many days in my classroom and loves to play with my students. He rarely barks but loves to sing and run around in circles. His brother is a 11 year old cat named Mozart who puts up with him but doesn’t like the constant chasing and the fact that Sondheim plays with his toys and eats his cat food if given the chance.

He lives in Southern California so he is not used to weather and doesn’t like wind, rain, or cold weather which made Christmas in Iowa and Boston interesting to say the least. He loves sunning himself in the window and sleeping under the blankets or burroing in the laundry. His favorite toy is his gator which he has had since the day he came home.

He is the love of my life and the best thing I ever decided to do! A four-legged child to say the least!”

Hundreds of dogs and cats get sick and some die from rock salt

While many of us are currently experiencing some unseasonably warm weather, this is an important topic to make sure your aware of and you take precautions for.

Per daily mail.co.uk: “Hundreds of pets are becoming seriously ill and in some cases dying because of the rock salt and antifreeze being used during the cold snap, animal charities warned yesterday.”

“Dogs and cats are walking through the substances left by gritters trying to clear roads and car drivers defrosting their windscreens and then licking them off their paws.

Consuming rock salt can cause dehydration, liver failure and pancreatitis, while antifreeze contains the chemical ethylene glycol, which can be lethal when ingested.”

Thought I could not find any exact numbers on how many dogs are poisoned by rock sale or ant-freeze, one article which was written early winter last year suggest the number is quite high: “The RSPCA said it has received 248 calls about cases involving cats and dogs between January 1 and mid-November this year, compared to 259 for the whole of 2009”

What can you do to help keep your dogs safe?

1. When on walks in the city where salt may be used, watch where you are going and attempt to avoid areas that have been heavily salted.

2. Another option is that dog boots are available that your dog can wear that will protect their feet.

3. Never allow your dog to lick or drink from the street or sidewalk, even if it appear to be a fresh clean puddle. It is also best not to let you pet eat snow in a public area.

4. When you get home from a walk, use a warm wet wash cloth to thoroughly wash off your dogs pads to make sure there is nothing on them or stuck in their hair.

In some areas you may be able to find city or park trails that are not treated with salt and or other chemical ice melters. Many of these are the same park trails that you walk on in the summer, thought you initial thought may be that they are buried deep with snow, they are often well used and easy for small dogs to travel on.

Stay Safe!

Dog of the Day for 2/1/2012

“Mr Wiggles our poodle mix came to us at 5 mos and he is just a joy to be around except for the fact that he thinks that no one should be allowed to walk or drive on our streets, barks. Killer we adopted from a friend at age 10 when they decided to drive long haul with their husband, he’s my cuddler wants to be right up beside me, he doesn’t like the baby dog at all and he has a odor problem sometimes doesn’t matter how clean he is it just crops up like a bad penny for no reason that we can figure out even took him to the vet for it I really thought maybe he was rotting on the inside that’s how bad it can be at times they said its just him and for 16 he’s very healthy, Chewbacca or Chewy as we call him because he chews on everything has already had to have a piece of plastic toy removed from his stomach, has masses of energy wants to play all the time and harass Killer is really a very stout little boy, our problems with him are he runs after anyone and won’t listen when called he also has a problem letting us know when he has to go so most nights he gets crated, they are our boys and we love them all”
